Super-Natural Author Shifts Writing Talents Towards Fantasy Fiction
With a new, supernatural book on the market and an upcoming fantasy novel to be released in the Spring 2008, Authors News Media thought that we’d sit down with the multi-talented, Corinna Underwood to talk about what makes her tick.
ANM: What can you tell us about Corinna Underwood?
CU: I originate from Stoke-on-Trent in England but I’ve been living in the United States for 8 years now. I have a 17 year-old son; Simon and I live in Georgia with my partner, Niels along with our dog, Arizona. When I’m not writing, I enjoy organic gardening, hiking, reading, listening to jazz and country music and camping; especially in extreme weather and unusual locations. I love to travel and have been all over the UK, many states in the US, France and Egypt.
ANM: When you curl up with a book, who’s name is on the spine?
CU: There are far too many authors to mention but I would say, Dean Koontz is my number one.
ANM: So, how long have you been writing?
CU: I discovered my desire to write at the age of 8 years old and I’ve been writing stories and poems every since. I have been writing professionally for the past 10 years. I freelance for a number of magazines and websites including Alive, Life Extension, Organic Producer, After Dark and also FoxNews.com.
ANM: So tell us about the upcoming fantasy novel, "Book of Time".
CU: It is the story of twins, Hal and Ree, estranged since they were just a few years old. Hal has grown up with his grandmother in the solitude of the ruined village, which was once home to his clans. He has spent his life assisting his grandmother in caring for his parents. Ree lives in another world waiting to be reunited with her brother.
The clans are a gentle people who live by the rhythms of the cycles of nature and the power of the great Becoming of life’s energies. Each clan is driven by its unique, elemental energy and each clan member experiences a “coming of age” when he/she finds their own elemental gift; referred to as they’re Becoming. The clans were forced to flee from their homeland many seasons ago, driven out by Dominar, the evil ruler of the Citadel. Now, the clans hide from the Citadel’s ruling council as well as their ruthless leader who seeks the power of "the Becoming" to make himself immortal.
After ten years, the twins are reunited however the event does not unfold in a way that either imagined. Ree learns the fate of her parents and Hal must face the clans’ rejection of his grandfather, Darius. Together, brother and sister venture through the lands of “the Dreaming” where all seems real but nothing is quite as it seems. They must find the key to saving their parents and ultimately protecting “the Becoming” from Dominar’s destruction.
ANM: For whom did you write this book? Who was your intended audience?
CU: Anyone with a vivid imagination and love of fantasy; young and old.
ANM: Where did you get the idea about writing this fantasy novel?
CU: “Book of Time” was inspired by an unusual dream I had a few years ago. I wanted to explore the themes of “coming of age” while exploring the way different generations develop stories to pass down the knowledge of their family histories. It is a wonderful tradition to be treasured, however, I also need to show how sometimes these stories can become distorted.
ANM: Why did you choose to journey into the genre of fantasy?
CU: I chose fantasy because it allows me free reign with my imagination.
ANM: What do the characters in "Book of Time" say about Corinna Underwood?
CU: I think perhaps all of them are a little of me.
.
ANM: What do you want people to take with them once they reach the back cover?
CU: I want them to feel as if they have traveled side by side with the characters on their journey. As they turn each page, I want them to be consumed with Hal and Ree, wondering what’s going to happen next.
ANM: What else is out there penned by Corinna Underwood?
CU: Schiffer Press has just released my first in a series of haunted history books- Haunted History: Atlanta and North Georgia. You can find out more about it here.
ANM: So, what's next for Corinna Underwood?
